Your CV is the first thing your potential employer will look at. This means that making it unique is vital if you want to be invited for an interview at your desired company. Here are five ways to make your CV stand out to any hiring manager:
- Make sure that your personal statement is short and sweet. It shows who you are and what you can bring to the company. Remember that this isn’t your cover letter, so no more than 3-4 lines is needed. Your personal statement also needs to be unique, as the hiring manager will have seen plenty of generic personal statements that have no relevance to the specific job.
- The basics need to be right – your CV needs to be concise and not over two pages long. Remember, there are no excuses for typos, so read through your CV multiple times before submitting it to an employer.
- Throughout your CV the hiring manager will want to see the outcome of your actions as well as what you did either in your previous employment or in any transferable skills you may have gained. Demonstrate this by using facts and figures to outline your achievements.
- You should think of a significant unique selling point that you possess, whether it’s that you run a blog, have done extracurricular activities, or even completed a training course. This will give you an edge over the other applicants and help your CV stand out from the crowd.
- Last but not least, you need to specifically tailor your CV to the role that you’re applying to. If the skills and experience on your CV aren’t relevant to the role, it will almost certainly be rejected. This can be time consuming, but the benefits you will see in terms of positive responses from employers will be well worth it in the end!
